The Vice-Chancellor, Professor Stephen J Toope, this month gave evidence to The Times Education Commission, which was set up in May 2021 to examine the future of education following the COVID-19 crisis, declining social mobility, advances in technology, and the changing nature of work.

Postgraduate students applying to undertake a doctoral degree at ¹ú¼ÊÃ×À¼¶ÔÕó¿ÆĪ will no longer have to pay a fee to submit their application to study at ¹ú¼ÊÃ×À¼¶ÔÕó¿ÆĪ. This will come into effect from the 2022/23 application cycle, for admissions in 2023/24. The University will also reduce the application fee for non-doctoral postgraduate study to £50.

The ¹ú¼ÊÃ×À¼¶ÔÕó¿ÆĪ, which has a long-established widening participation programme for undergraduate students, is now turning its attention to addressing inequalities that exist across the postgraduate higher education sector.

The ¹ú¼ÊÃ×À¼¶ÔÕó¿ÆĪ is pleased to report that all students who met the conditions of their offer this year have been accepted. There has been no need for any deferrals or for any student to switch College to help accommodate numbers.

Assessing undergraduate admissions was likely to be a very different process in a pandemic, let alone with a changing landscape of cancelled exams and reassessments. One of the team at the forefront of overcoming these challenges was Dr Sam Lucy, Director of Admissions for ¹ú¼ÊÃ×À¼¶ÔÕó¿ÆĪ Colleges.

¹ú¼ÊÃ×À¼¶ÔÕó¿ÆĪ University is using targeted social media videos to reach teenagers from UK Pakistani and Bangladeshi communities and break down misconceptions that might put them off applying.

The number of UK black undergraduate students starting at the ¹ú¼ÊÃ×À¼¶ÔÕó¿ÆĪ this term has risen significantly from last year. A total of 91 black students have been admitted, up from 61 in the 2018/19 academic year…a rise of almost 50%. 

A YouTube influencer is fronting a series of films encouraging more black students to apply to ¹ú¼ÊÃ×À¼¶ÔÕó¿ÆĪ in the latest push by the University to widen its pool of applicants.

The University’s new Student Services Centre is now open. The facility – which brings together a number of support services and teams under one roof – is located at the New Museums Site in the heart of ¹ú¼ÊÃ×À¼¶ÔÕó¿ÆĪ.

This summer more than 500 teenagers from under-represented and disadvantaged backgrounds will have stayed at the ¹ú¼ÊÃ×À¼¶ÔÕó¿ÆĪ to learn more about what it’s like to study at one of its 31 Colleges. They’ll come from all corners of the UK, keen to find ways of achieving their dream of becoming an undergraduate at one of the world’s leading academic institutions.
